Brooklands and James May Toy Stories

JAMES MAY SET TO BREAK SCALEXTRIC WORLD RECORD
AT BROOKLANDS

Leading slot racing brand, Scalextric, owned by Hornby Hobbies Ltd, are set to create a new world record by recreating the legendary Brooklands motor racing circuit near Weybridge in Surrey.  This innovative project, which will be attended by Guinness World Records, will be shown on a new TV series on BBC2 presented by James May called James May’s Toy Stories.

The plan is to build a full-size racing circuit on the original 2.75 mile track entirely out of Scalextric track.  Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motorsport venue when it opened in 1907.  The circuit hosted its last race in 1939 but now Scalextric will build a full-size racing circuit on the infamous original track. The circuit, which will be built at the Pendle Slot Racing Festival on Sunday 16th August, will require the laying, using and dismantling of around 20,000 track sections as well as being able to get power and control to all sections of the track.

Upon completion Scalextric will have two teams then race two cars around the track in the greatest slot car race of all time! One team will consist of members from the local community whilst the other team will be made up of Scalextric club members and enthusiasts.  There will also be exclusive opportunities for people to win the chance to participate in this unique race!

The James May’s Toy Stories series will celebrate childhood pleasures and dreams whilst also turning these very dreams into reality.  With this in mind, Scalextric, an iconic brand for many during their childhood, has sought to turn fantasy into reality by recreating the Brooklands race track.
Paul Chandler, Scalextric Marketing Manager, commented: “This is a huge and exciting project for Scalextric and one which will certainly represent a milestone in the history of the brand.”
