Do you have trouble buying a present for the men in your family?

It is likely that almost all of the male population had a Scalextric set when they were children, or at least played with one; even the girls may have had a quick spin while their brothers weren’t looking! Jon’s new book, a part of the famous Shire Library of books on historical themes, tells the story of Scalextric – the ultimate boys’ toy – from 1957 when it was invented to the present day. Jon takes you on a nostalgic journey through your childhood memories: the excitement of cars flying off the track, broken bumpers and windscreens littering the floor, and the thrill of saving for a lovely yellow Porsche or a fabulous black and gold JPS Lotus. The book costs just £5.99 so it is an ideal stocking-filler, and Jon is donating half of all his royalties to Help for Heroes.

Jon says, “I’ve always admired the work done by the Help for Heroes charity, so now is my chance to help our soldiers should they fall upon difficult times. The biggest selling Shire book in the publisher’s history sold around 250,000 copies, so my goal is to beat this figure and in doing so we should raise around £50,000 – we’ll keep everyone informed as to our progress…”

Jon will be signing copies of his new book at Milton Keynes Scalextric swapmeet on 4th October and also at Huntingdon Library, Cambridgeshire on 21st November from 10am till 2pm – a circuit will be available at the latter event for people to race both vintage and new cars – see how they compare! – plus an exhibition of Scalextric through the ages.rel-bookmark
