History
Renault was first involved in Formula One in 1977 with a single car entry at the British Grand Prix. The team's drivers in its early years in Formula One included René Arnoux, Alain Prost and Derek Warwick. Renault left Formula One at the end of the 1986 season returning as an engine supplier to Williams between 1989 and 1997 and Benetton between 1995 and 1997. From the mid-1990s Renault powered teams dominated the World Championship with five Drivers and six Constructors Championships.
Renault bought the Benetton Formula One team in 2000 and rebranded the team as Renault F1 in 2002. The team finished second in the 2004 Championship and then won both the Drivers and Constructors titles in 2005 and 2006.
Giancarlo Fisichella debuted in Formula One in 1996 with Minardi. He won his first race at the rain-soaked Brazilian Grand Prix of 2003 when driving for Jordan, although he was not awarded this victory until five days after the race following an FIA review of the result. He joined the Renault Formula One team in 2005, helping the team to secure the Constructors Championship for two consecutive years. Smooth, tenacious and accomplished, the Italian is respected throughout the paddock for his speed and competitiveness.
