Driver: In 1977 Gilles Villeneuve was invited to drive a third works McLaren in the British Grand Prix. He qualified an impressive ninth, splitting regular drivers Hunt (in pole position) and Jochen Mass (eleventh on the grid). Delayed by a pit stop, he ran competitively to finish tenth.
