When can I buy an ARC Pro powerbase for my digital layout

I'd like to echo the concerns put forward by anthony_grundy1. Recently I was in Austria with the wife and we visited a car museum there (http://fahrtraum.at/) where they had a huge "slot car" set up as provided by a competitor to Hornby Hobbies/Scalextric. Being the big kid that I am, we hired a pair of cars and wireless controllers and zipped around on it for an hour or so. She decided a Scalextric Digital set for my Xmas present would be ideal so the deed was done.

I'm impressed by how much better the Scalextric "sport" track is than the older stuff I had as a child (early 90's) and the digital feature being able to switch lanes and run more cars on two lanes adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise pedestrian experience I had in the 1990's. I have a hunch that the digital cars run better at slower speeds too, and maybe better on a dirtier track too.

The missus assumed, as anyone might, that the "digital" version would have the widest range of expansion options available to it. Indeed, the competitors' version we played with in Austria had wireless controllers (I assume Bluetooth) to a base unit, and a PC offering timing and race facilities as an app might do on iOS/Android. Now Xmas is out the way, we realise that the advanced timing features offered by the ARC system only works with analogue track. The timing and/or counting functions are really the only way to make any slot car racing competitive else there is no measured target or way of knowing who has "won". Such a shame the offerings https://www.scalextric.com/digital-lap-counter.html and https://www.scalextric.com/pit-lane/digital-accessories/digital-pit-lane-game.html don't yet exceed the technological achievement already set down by our European cousins.

Thinking about this problem further, how does one design a gadget to record lap times or quantities achieved by competing players if they can readily swap over lanes? How does one avoid clocking up lap counts on behalf of your buddy if you cross the start/finish line on his lane having just overtaken or blocked? On old-skool analogue track, this is never an issue. New-skool digital cars clearly have rudimentary "communication" with the track pieces as they approach a cross-over section, but I'm not convinced that this "communication" is sophisticated enough to differentiate one car from another. Only that there is a demand to change lane, or to not change lane, from ANY car.

As an electronics engineer by training (not now my career path though) I recognise the challenge ahead for the design people at Hornby Hobbies and I wish you good luck... I for one wait with baited breath for the exciting solution! The only other alternative is to hack a European system into a length of Scalextric Sport track and solder in the modules to the cars. Not so desirable, but confident that it would work!

Best of luck with the engineering work.

Wonderland models have the digital RCS pro as a release date end of Feb 2015 with the RCS air unknown. Now not sure if this is a true release date? I have the ARC one and although it's great fun a lot of the advance features are RCS pro only such as yellow flag, KERS, and weather so I'll most likely upgrade when it does get released.

Hey there, thanks for the info - that piece of kit looks more like the spec I'm after, and if that price is final then it is quite reasonable too. Afterall, Hornby make more profit if they don't need to provide an LCD display as it runs on a phone or tablet instead. "Just" the right software is required instead.

Can i use the ARC Pro with A6carPB?

Yes, technically I can't see why you couldn't be able to though there would be some amendments to make.

BUT before considering this idea further it would be prudent to wait to see the performance, functionality and practicality of the ARC PRO system. We hope we've designed it in such a way that it makes it a 'no-brainer' to progress to the ARC PRO and leave the C7042 6carPB behind.

However, in the same circuit, they would both work independently - you couldn't synchonise them together and you would have to decide which one had the hand controllers plugged into it. You would also have to electrically isolate the powerbase without the hand controllers from the track rails - so this scenario assumes you are just using the ARC PRO base and smart media as a nice lap counter which is an awful waste of money.

I hope you will be able to use ARC PRO in preference to 6CPB. There is superior functionality in terms of pits stops and refueling etc.

Hi

The ARC ONE powerbase (and ARC AIR and ARC PRO) have a USB interface for the purpose of firmware updates.

It is also provided for third-party developments. For instance, someone may wish to develop an interface to PC (rather than tablet) or other hardware.

Getting fed up with waiting now for this Arc Pro, sorry to bring another brand into this but Carrera have done it and mastered it now.

6 car race with automated pace car if you crash, ghost cars upto 6 people can race with two more ghosts, pull off area for pitstop, not stopping on the fast finish straight in front of everyone,. the list go's on with what i have read.

And this was already on the market 2 years ago from them.

And to be honest who really wants to keep hooking up there bloody tablets and ipads and apps, sorry i think Scalextric are wasting to much time on so called app displays for this and that, why dont you make your own sorry to say as Carrera have done, each individual display for a driver, all six of my friends cant all stand together and whatch one tablet or ipad display, give us or each person there own display gadget telling them what the cars doing.

I dont think your asking the right people of what they want from this.

As i stated in another page, you seem to of gone backwards, with Arc Air, 2 cars to 6 car digital, back to 2 car race system, i dont get it.

Getting to the point of selling up and changing brands.

sorry i am !!!

Carrera does not have an analog system for 1/32 cars that rivals ARC. They just annoucned someithing like ARC ONE but is for thier 1/43 line.

Maybe, but Carrera digital system runs 1,24 cars aswell as 1,32 cars, it does everything and more that Scalextric arc pro  (if we see it) is trying to sell to us, there system has been doing everything already for 2 years i might add again, and we are still waiting.

If as i stated wait for this app system, to run off ipads and tablets, and we have six mates round all trying to see the screen at one time while we all race, its not going to work.

Arc only runs one ghost car, theres can run six players plus two other ghosts to the game, or if your on your own i beleive 6 ghosts cars and they will swap lanes on there own too.

No mention of this on Arc Pro.

It has pace car function need i go on.

I'm just gutted Scalextric are so far behind.

And to be fare i dont really see the purpose of keep unplugging my ipad and carrying to my track to play, i just want to go and play and turn the thing on not keep bluetoothing connecting everytime or have another cost of a seperate tablet just for this system.

Next thing they will bring out is i can race sat in my lounge with my ipad on my lap and race from there while my track is in the garage.

Absolutely loving ARC Air, and hoping ARC Pro isn't far behind as I have mostly digital cars, and large digital set-up. The app need a little work in terms of the my garage function, As it only has  a limited list of sets and cars at the moment i.e. old Digital Platinum and not the 2014 version C1330  . Also selecting cars to race should give you the option of your own garage rather than scroll through hundreds of cars.

Scalextric really needs ARC pro now to bring Digital racing upto date.

The C7042 is not new, you can upgrade firmware if you had an earlier version but the hardware has been around for quite a while.

There is no "ARC" to compare with it. ARC air is analogue. ARC pro (Digital) has not been released and should be a replacement for C7042 if they ever get around to it releasing it.

Andypc's post is just a little confusing as he talks about ARC Air then goes on to say he has mostly digital cars (That don't run under ARC air!). While track itself can often run either analogue or digital, subject to a few qualifications, you could swap the power bases and run either a digital base with digital cars or run analogue with the Arc air powerbase.

Only C7042 can run both analogue and digital, but not both at the same time. Only Digital can use lane changing, Also to run analogue under C7042 there are restrictions on your layout such as if you use crossover tracks you must have an even number, to form two seperate tracks for the analogue cars

I agree digital cars can run on a Analogue circuit , so I worded my reply incorrectly. The lane changing sections will not be working when the track is powered Analogue.

The other issue to be aware of is an Analogue car can be permanently damaged if you try to run it on a Digitally powered track. So with a set up that can be powered one way or another some care is needed.

Finally if using a digital design track in analogue mode there are all sorts of  things you need to check to ensure the two lanes are isolated from each other. So people need to read the scalextric advise  section at

https://www.scalextric.com/us-en/support/scalextric-digital   Then scroll down to

"Tip: C7042 Analogue Mode and Lane Change track pieces"

Hi,

It can be updated via Bluetooth so no need for a USB port.
