Team Scalextric Race for Real – The Team Scalextric Story
Team Scalextric was created by Scalextric’s very own Consumer Promotions Manager, Adrian Norman. Adrian has worked at Hornby's HQ in Margate, Kent for ten years and has been a fan of the slot car brand since he was a child. Racing is Adrian’s passion and his hobby. Creating a real life racing team was Adrian’s life-long dream and something that he worked and saved towards for over five years.
In 2012 Scalextric became a sponsor of Adrian’s team and in April, Team Scalextric was born. Adrian raced alongside teammate Patrick Mortimer, an experienced racing driver in the MINI Challenge who shared his race track tips with novice Adrian. Both drivers’ passion for speed started as boys with their Scalextric sets. Team Scalextric were supported in the pits by Advent Motorsport with three mechanics working around the clock to provide Adrian and Patrick with their race prepared cars.
With twenty races spread over seven months, Team Scalextric has experienced both the highs and lows of motor racing this season. Team Scalextric had a huge following throughout the season, with competition prizes to meet Team Scalextric on their race days and Scalextric sets to give away at the different race circuits.
The MINI Challenge season ended with Adrian, racing his MINI Cooper to 4th place in the Club Class and 7th overall – a huge achievement for a novice-racing driver. Patrick who raced his MINI Cooper S in the JCW class finished 12th in Class and 18th overall. Nicknamed ‘Mr Consistent’ by the Scalextric team, Adrian finished the Challenge with no incidents and no damage to his car. Patrick, on the other hand, wrote off two MINI JCW cars, one in race number 10 and again in race number 18!
Adrian's passion for motor sport started when he was about five-years-old, when he got his first Scalextric set. His local race circuit was Lydden Hill and he used to go and watch club meetings there. Working for Scalextric got him even closer to real life motor sport. Adrian always had a desire to get on the grid himself. As a brand, Scalextric makes the official models of the MINI Challenge cars so there was a natural link to the series. Adrian bought Patrick’s old club class car last year and that got him into contact with Andrew Crighton at Advent Motorsport and he then worked with Scalextric to put the sponsorship deal together.
Adrian plans to race again in 2013!
