Ford Sierra RS500, Bathurst 1988

The 1988 Tooheys 1000 was a 1000 km endurance motor race for Group A Touring Cars. It was held on 2 October 1988 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst in New South Wales, Australia. The race was the opening round of the 1988 Asia-Pacific Touring Car Championship and was the 29th running of the Bathurst 1000. Tony Longhurst and Tomas Mezera where driving there Benson & Hedges Racing Ford Sierra RS500 and qualified in 3rd position. The 1988 race was the only race in the history of the Bathurst 1000 to have commenced with a rolling start and that seemed to be a good omen for Longhurst and Mezera as they took first place, It was the first victory in the Bathurst 1000 for a turbocharged vehicle, and the first victory by a four-cylinder car since Bob Holden and Rauno Aaltonen won in a Morris Cooper S in 1966.

ATCC RS500

For mine, the Ford Sierra RS500 was the epitome of Touring Cars, both in Australia and in the UK. I was a particular fan of the Dick Johnson livery; however this is a very close second. I am not a smoker and I never have been, but I really appreciate the fact that Scalextric have been able to produce these cars with the tobacco sponsorship as they raced in the eighties and nineties. In today’s nanny society it is good to see that common sense prevails and we can have a genuine replica like this. The detail like the writing on the tyres really adds to this and it is a genuinely quick car. I cannot wait to add the extensions to my track and try and wind this car right out. I am definitely on the hunt for the Shell sponsored DJR RS500, but this car looks so good. Well done Scalextric! ... Read more

Aussie Cossie #2

Not a livery I was familiar with but I've enjoyed reading about this one. Sierra #5 for me and this one's wheels are excellent - a different design to the others and true to Tony Longhurst's 1988 Bathurst winning steed. A superb runner just like my other latest Sierras, this one will not disappoint. Interior detail improved like the Tim Harvey Labatts car - 'ape' sized hands replaced with scaled down mitts. Just the Andy Rouse Kaliber car to go now Scalextric which I eagerly anticipate!!! Right, off to pitch this baby against Dick Johnson's Shell Sierra and Jim Richard's JPS M3. #Bathurstwannabe
