Over the last few days it has become apparent that there is some confusion about the moderation team and how they help on the Forum. In an attempt to make the situation clear, I thought it would be helpful to create this post to outline how moderation works here on the Hornby Forum.
The starting point must be the Forum Rules & Guidelines which state, “While every effort is made to contact you before any censorship, we reserve the right to amend or remove any content without explanation.” and “We reserve the right to remove or censor ANY post at our discretion.” The moderators (and I) will endeavour to let you know if a post or a thread of yours has been hidden, however, there are many occasions where this won’t be possible, and you should not expect any notification.
It is also important to keep in mind why posts will be removed from the Forum. There are obvious reasons such as misplaced posts or topics, swearing, spam or the like, but the moderation team also try to tend to the Forum such that redundant or repetitive threads and posts are consolidated or hidden. This aspect of moderation will always be open to debate but each decision the moderation team and myself make are in the best interests of the Forum. Furthermore, posts may need to be hidden if they are connected to a thread or post that needs to be removed. Remember, these webpages are maintained to offer a fresh and welcoming atmosphere to anyone with an interest in model railways.
Lastly, if you have any concerns with these rules or with any actions of the moderators please contact me directly. Discussion on the Forum will not be entered in to as this simply creates more debate.
Before I go, please take a moment to appreciate the tricky situation the moderation team are in. They are on the Forum more often than most and tend to a huge range of tasks (not least the amount of spam we receive). The position offers no benefits and difficult decisions often need to made for the Forum as a whole. Moreover, most of the tasks are carried out such that they go completely unnoticed by the majority of the Forum community – a pretty thankless task.
I hope that clarifies the situation and, as always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.
